The Bowburn Banner Project.  A report by the organiser – Tony Griffiths.

EXHIBITION: “BIG MEETING MEMORIES”

For the first time, Durham Photographic Society will have an exhibition of photographs by members of past Galas (with the support of the Durham Miners’ Association and Durham County Council Arts Development)

It will be in a tent next to the new Co-op tent on the Racecourse for one day only.

Included are images from 1950, 1960 and from each decade since up to 2005 that will be of great interest to former mining communities and the general public. Visitors will be invited to see how the Gala has changed and evolved over the years, the people, the banners, the music, and help us date some of the earlier images and identify faces from the past.

THIS YEAR’S GALA  -  SATURDAY  8th JULY : THE BOWBURN BANNER PROJECT

Members will be out in force to capture the spirit and the essence of this year’s Big Meeting, the people, the traditions and the culture. We will be focussing particularly on the spectacular new Bowburn Banner and the associated Bowburn Junior School banner, from within the community and from the world class vantage points in Durham City, including the Cathedral, where the dedication of the banners will take place.

This project was funded by Durham County Council  Arts Development and the documentary will be shown by digital projection during the World Culture 2006 exhibition at the DLI Museum from 22nd July to 3rd September 2006.
